TPD wins several National Awards...and a truck

The Toccoa Police Department recently won state and national recognition, funds to purchase equipment, and a new, fully equipped truck.

The department won first place for agencies of its size in "rookie department of the year" (first time applicant) in its participation in the Governor's Highway Safety Challenge. The award provided a $4,000 credit to purchase equipment.

The department also won the national first place award for first time applications in the International Police Chiefs Conference held in Denver, Colo.

The Safety Challenge is sponsored by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety that recognizes and rewards the best overall traffic safety programs in the state.

Departments submit applications that document the agency's effective efforts to enforce the law and educate the public about occupant protection, driving impaired and speeding.

During the award ceremony, the Toccoa Police Department won a 2008 Chervrolet Silverado 4-door police truck, fully marked and equipped with a new radar unit, in-car video system, and a Toughbook laptop that will be used in school zones and for public relations such as at the Harvest Festival and Christmas parade.

"I am very proud of our department and the efforts of our officers," said police chief Jackie Whitmire.

At Monday’s city commission meeting, Bob Dallas, director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, and Ricky Rich of the same office, commended Whitmire and the police department for winning the awards.

Dallas said TPD's program is effective and noteworthy because it combines officer training, public information and enforcement efforts to reduce crashed and injuries within their jurisdiction.

Police Dispatch has moved

In 2006, the Toccoa Police dispatching services moved to the new 911 center.  The service did not change but the after-hours telephone number changed.

The Toccoa Police Department is open for report copies, fine payment, and any other regular police department business Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM at its normal address at 92 N. Alexander Street.

The police dispatch number is 706-779-3911.  Anyone who needs the police for non-emergencies should call that number.  This is also the telephone number for after-hours service for the City of Toccoa Gas, Water, and Public Works Departments.

The regular police telephone number for citizens who wish to speak with an officer will remain 706-282-3244 Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM.

There will be an emergency telephone in the front lobby of the Police Department for after-hours.  As always, please call 911 if you have an emergency.
